•$13 million generated from sale of former Woodside Maternity Hospital in East Fremantle
•Heritage building to be redeveloped as aged care facility
•Building sale to assist in budget repair and deliver local community benefits

The heritage-listed former Woodside Maternity Hospital in East Fremantle has been sold for $13 million and will be redeveloped as an aged care facility.

Funds from the sale will assist with repairing the budget situation left behind by the Liberal National Government.

The East Fremantle community will see a valued heritage building revamped as a much-needed aged care facility.

The Woodside Maternity Hospital was built in 1897 as a grand residence, which was later converted into flats in the 1920s.

It began operating as a hospital in the mid-1940s, and in 1951, the Western Australian Government acquired the site and converted the building into a maternity hospital.

The old hospital was permanently entered into the State Register of Heritage Places in 1998 before closing in 2006.

Hall & Prior Health & Aged Care Group and local superannuation fund Fresh Fields Projects formed a joint venture to purchase the property, and have entered into a Heritage Agreement, which will ensure the heritage buildings are appropriately maintained in perpetuity.

Comments attributed to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The State Government and the Hall & Prior Joint Venture has worked together to ensure the community benefits from a much needed aged care facility while ensuring the heritage values of this East Fremantle property are respected.

"The former Woodside Maternity Hospital has been vacant for several years, selling these surplus government buildings benefits the local community and delivers a return for WA."

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"The Government is committed to ensuring aged care providers have the opportunity of securing land in a timely manner to build quality aged care residential facilities to meet the ongoing needs of the Western Australian community.

"As the State's population ages, it is vital there are appropriate facilities available at a local level.  Provision of facilities for those members of our community who can no longer live at home is essential for the benefit of the individual and their families.

"Through the provision of residential aged care places, clients receive care from experienced and accredited providers, including health and allied health professionals, which can help to improve their quality of life.  This in turn reduces the burden on the State's public hospital system."
