Western Australians who are interested in shaping the future direction of our heritage are invited to nominate for the Heritage Council and its Register and Development Committees.

Heritage Council Chair Anne Arnold said the Council played an important role in the identification, conservation and sensitive development of our State’s cultural heritage.

“We are seeking motivated people who have demonstrated knowledge of or experience in heritage matters, particularly professionals working in the industry or those who have experience serving on boards and committees in related areas” Mrs Arnold said.

There is one position available on the Heritage Council and four on each of the Register and Development Committees.

“Whilst the members of the Register and Development Committees are not members of the Heritage Council, they play an important role in assisting the Council with its decision-making,” Mrs Arnold said.

The Heritage Council is the State’s advisory body on cultural heritage matters and focuses on places that are significant to the Western Australian community.

The Register Committee determines the priority of assessment for all places nominated to the State Register; reviews assessment documentation for places under consideration; and makes recommendations to the Minister for Heritage on places determined to have cultural heritage significance at a State level.

The Development Committee provides heritage advice to decision-making authorities such as local governments on large-scale developments or complex projects, except when a project is particularly sensitive in which case it is dealt with by the Council.

“Applicants should be prepared to make a substantial commitment in terms of time and expertise but the rewards for making a significant contribution to the future of our State’s cultural heritage are great,” Mrs Arnold said.

“I urge people who are interested in applying to contact the State Heritage Office for more information,” she said.

The new members will be appointed on the recommendation of the Minister for Heritage.

Nominations close on 17 May 2017. For more information, visit the Nomination page or phone (08) 6552 4000.
