Fremantle's West End today became the biggest single place to be included in the State Register of Heritage Places.

Heritage Minister Albert Jacob said the West End listing covered almost 200,000sqm and featured 250 buildings, many embodying the exuberance of the gold boom era when Fremantle was a thriving port town.

Bounded by Market Street to the east, Collie Street and Marine Terrace to the south, Little High Street to the west and including both sides of Phillimore Street to the north, the West End has an important story to tell about the State's early history and development.

"Fremantle's West End is a rare example of a highly intact port city business district and is particularly notable for its impressive variety of gold boom era buildings," Mr Jacob said.

"It includes former banks, pubs, hotels, warehouses, import-export businesses and shipping companies that speak to its maritime heritage."

The Minister said that while a number of places within the West End were already individually registered, the inclusion of the precinct in the State Register recognised the important story it told as a whole.

"The recognition of the precinct for its State value will enhance the area's appeal as a tourism destination, where visitors can immerse themselves in the sights and experiences of this important historical area," he said.

"However, being on the State Register does not mean that places cannot be altered.  It simply means that development needs to be sensitive to the heritage values of the precinct."

The City of Fremantle nominated the West End for inclusion in the State Register following its own detailed assessment and community consultation process.

The Heritage Council has written to stakeholders to advise them that West End, Fremantle has been entered in the register, and to invite comments on permanent registration.
