New track for Bridgetown Barracks

22 November 2011

Bridgetown Trainmen's BarracksGuests will get a taste of history when Bridgetown Trainmen's Barracks makes tracks to become a boutique motel in the picturesque town.

What’s more, the Barracks has now powered into the State Register of Heritage Places.

Office of Heritage Executive Director Graeme Gammie said Bridgetown Trainmen’s Barracks is a unique opportunity for visitors to understand the difference rail transport made to the region, whilst enjoying a relaxing getaway.

“Completed in 1950, the Barracks was the most up-to-date purpose built accommodation for trainmen in Australia at that time,” Mr Gammie said.

“Superior in design and style to earlier cabin style barracks, the purpose built accommodation, was used as a model for future trainmen’s barracks in the State.”

The Barracks demonstrates the importance of Bridgetown as a significant rail centre in the South West. The Barracks was necessary to enable the operation of WA’s extensive rail system and in turn enhanced the local economy and tourism in the scenic town.

Owner Jeff Sheahan, who is passionate about railway history, said Bridgetown Valley Lodge would provide guests with the opportunity to learn more about the history of the place whilst enjoying all that Bridgetown has to offer.

“We are planning quality accommodation, an onsite café, theme weekends and with its convenient yet quiet location our motel will be a wonderful retreat and getaway for couples and groups,” Mr Sheahan said.

Bridgetown Trainmen’s Barracks joins the Railway Barracks, Wongan Hills and the barracks at the Pinjarra Railway Yards on the State Register.
