How Heritage Works

The Deanery, PerthHeritage conservation is as an essential means by which to preserve the stories of our past, enhance our 'sense of place' and shape the future identity of our State.

Heritage conservation also has a range of socio-economic benefits including adaptive reuse, heritage tourism, generating new employment and creating sustainable communities through the principle of embodied energy.

Heritage protection in Australia is not as established or understood as it is in many European countries. However the protection of our heritage continues to be an important issue for many Australians. In fact, a recent national survey showed that 92% of Australians value heritage as a core part of our national identity.
