Heritage Tourism
Western Australia’s heritage is linked to its places, buildings and the people who lived here. Early convict craftsmen helped build much of our State, and Perth’s town Hall, Fremantle Prison and the Fremantle Roundhouse are testament to their skill. Many of the early accomplishments no longer exist and many of the settlements have been abandoned but the stories remain and the impact they have on the Western Australian attitude is alive and well today.
The rich, ancient landscape and the abundant natural resources it holds have fueled economic booms and shaped our towns and cities. It has created Western Australians' optimistic and confident outlook. Understanding a place's heritage is important to understanding who they are. Heritage tourism helps to create a strong sense of place and identity.
It is this desire to understand what makes a place special and unique that has fueled the growth in heritage tourism. Heritage tourists tend to stay longer, spend more, and seek out experiences in museums and art galleries, historical and heritage buildings, sites and monuments. Click here for more information.
In 2006, Western Australia developed a Heritage Tourism Strategy. The aim of the strategy is to increase heritage tourism experiences across WA, to raise awareness of the importance of our heritage, and to encourage the ongoing conservation of WA’s heritage places.
Tourism Western Australia has a number of resources for visitors to the state including information about accommodation, attractions and events.
