What are the threads that connect places with their past? How does history help our understanding of heritage? What common knowledge and skills support a successful local museum and an Indigenous cultural tourism business?

On the 11 & 12 May 2017, the Heritage, History and Collections (GLAM) sectors will join to share and explore the many elements that contribute to WA’s unique past.  This event promises to be a milestone in bringing together a broad range of experience, knowledge and understanding from many different projects, organisations and backgrounds.

The Heritage Council recognises the importance of good information and education, and has stepped into the role of principal sponsor for this event.

Heritage Council offer for private owners

APPLICATION PERIOD EXTENDED

A key step to caring for a heritage place is understanding its significance and the reasons why it is considered special.  The best decisions about heritage places are made based on a good understanding of cultural heritage and the factors that contribute to it.

To help develop awareness and understanding of cultural heritage that will assist with good decision-making, the Heritage Council is inviting custodians of State Registered places to join them at the WA State Heritage & History Conference, 2017. 

In recognition of the role private owners play in the care of the State’s heritage, those responsible for a State Registered property are invited to apply for a free one-day ticket to the State Conference, worth $195.  Please see below for information on eligibility and how to apply.

Eligibility

Eligible properties are those places included in the State Register of Heritage Places that are in private ownership.  This includes ownership by private individuals, corporate and not-for-profit bodies, but excludes State departments and agencies listed in Schedule 1 of the Financial Management Act 2006, local governments and government trading enterprises. 

This offer is available to the owner of an eligible property, or the person legally responsible for its care.  If you are not the registered owner of an eligible property, your application should include evidence to confirm your responsibility for the care and maintenance of the place.

Only one application should be made in respect of each place.  This condition may be varied at the discretion of the Executive Director, State Heritage Office, in relation to precincts or other sites in multiple ownership.

How to Apply

Applications should be sent via email to lgs@stateheritage.wa.gov.au with the following information:

  • - Name and address of the heritage place
  • - Place number*
  • - Your name and role (eg owner, property manager)
  • - If not an owner, evidence of your responsibility for the place (eg lease agreement)
  • - A brief outline of how attendance at the conference would help you and benefit the conservation of the place, or assist the wider understanding and appreciation of heritage.

*To find the place number and confirm that your property is included in the State Register, refer to our online database, inHerit.  If you are responsible for multiple properties please identify all that qualify.

Terms & Conditions

The WA State Heritage & History Conference 2017 is an event undertaken by events management company Meeting Masters, and is sponsored by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. 

Applications for free tickets must be received by 5pm Friday 3 March

The award of free tickets is at the absolute discretion of the Executive Director, Department of the State Heritage Office.  Ticket numbers are limited and allocation may take into account factors including, but not limited to:

  • - the information provided in applicant emails
  • - which heritage place the applicant nominates
  • - the extent and complexity of the applicant’s heritage property portfolio
  • - further benefits that, in the opinion of the State Heritage Office, may accrue from the applicant’s attendance at the event.

Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.  Applications that do not nominate an eligible property will not be considered.

Successful applicants may nominate either Thursday 11 May or Friday 12 May as their preferred date for attendance.  Day tickets will be allocated subject to availability and in line with the terms and conditions of this offer.

If for any reason the preferred date is not available the applicant will be contacted and offered the alternative date.  After the issue of tickets, any request for a change of dates should be made to the event managers, Meeting Masters.

Tickets may not be transferred nor exchanged without the written consent of the State Heritage Office and the agreement of Meeting Masters.  Tickets are valid only for the nominated person.  Proof of identity may be requested by the event managers. 

Day tickets for the alternate day and entry to additional events and activities are available for purchase through the conference website at standard rates.

Neither the Heritage Council of Western Australia nor the State Heritage Office, including their respective staff and representatives, will be liable for any injury, loss or damages incurred as a result of changes to, or cancellation of, the event.
