Review of the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990

On 19 April 2011, Heritage Minister John Castrilli launched Western Australia's first State Cultural Heritage Policy. The review of the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990 is the first major initiative arising from the Policy.

The Review aims to ensure that any changes to legislation leads to an Act that is:

• Open
• Transparent
• Simple to operate and understand
• Able to reflect best practice in the recognition and protection of heritage places

The Heritage Council is asking for your views on a series of proposals contained in the Review's Discussion Paper. These proposals set out what a new Heritage Act should do.

The Discussion Paper is the next critical stage in the development of a new Heritage Act. In April, the public were asked to provide feedback on a Consultation Paper and more than 100 submissions were received. This feedback combined with stakeholder consultation, and research into other jurisdictions and heritage practices, formulated the proposals in the Discussion Paper.

Feedback on the Discussion Paper's proposals is essential in creating draft legislation that embraces contemporary best practice and reflects the expectations and aspirations of the Western Australian community on how the State's culture heritage is cared for and administered.
